Tubelined tiles have a rich colored design that is applied to each individual tile by hand. A raised ridge defines the outline of the design and is created by a thin line of clay that is piped or trailed onto the tile face. Into these walled separate areas the glazes are applied, again by hand. When fired in a kiln under high temperatures, the glazes fuse to create rich vibrant colors and a unique light reflective texture. Tubelining is a method of decorating tiles that was used extensively during the Arts and Crafts as well as Art Nouveau periods. The nature of what is predominately a hand decorative tile is such that every piece is an original in its own right. Some glazes, particularly the heavier more light reactive effects used to achieve maximum depth of color and character are subject to crazing. This feature is an inherent characteristic of the glazes, and gives an 'aged' quality to the finished piece.
